The benefits of gargling with sea salt are numerous, especially where oral health is concerned. It can help to remove harmful bacteria that causes bad breath, infections, sore throats and coughs. Sea salt and water is safe and can be used to rinse the mouth in the morning, after meals, as well as at night. It can be used instead of a commercially produced mouthwash, and unlike commercial mouthwashes, the sea salt water solution will not attack any good bacteria.

A cup of warm water mixed with 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. salt is a good solution to gargle with deep in the throat. It is important to not use more than the suggested amount because too much salt can lead to dehydration and have an adverse effect. However, one should gargle as much as needed or at least several times a day.

Although warm water is suggested in many cases, it does not have to be warm in order to obtain the benefits. A large amount can be made and kept in the bathroom for convenience.

How is sea salt made?

Sea salt is formed by allowing sea water to evaporate from the sun and wind naturally. Layers of sea salt are left behind after the sea water goes through the evaporation process. It is then purified, but it generally does not go through any more processing. There are some salts that contain 92 trace minerals that the body needs, such as iodine, iron, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, potassium, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, fluoride, aluminum, copper and zinc. These minerals are vital for a person trying to heal from a cold, sore throat, toothache, or from a tooth extraction.

Sore throat

Sea salt helps to neutralize acids by restoring the pH balance in the throat region, thus alleviating the pain and burning sensation in the throat. The salt will also dissolve excess mucus and increase blood flow to the throat in order to speed up the healing process.

Gargling with sea salt and warm water can help relieve the pain of coughs and the symptoms of dryness in the throat due to the common cold. It can help to relieve and eliminate that dry, itchy or scratchy feeling one might have. One reason for this is that salt absorbs moisture and causes osmosis; for example, if a person puts salt on a tomato or a cucumber more liquid will come out of it. Likewise, in a person's mouth, salt absorbs by drawing moisture and harmful bacteria from swollen tissues; thus providing relief. Moreover, an environment composed of salt will block harmful bacteria from growing in the first place.

Toothaches

Another benefit of gargling with sea salt is when one has a toothache; the gargling with sea salt and water will alleviate some of the pain. Also, if a person has to have a tooth pulled, gargling with sea salt and water will start the healing process and cleanse the area where the tooth was pulled. Additionally, it will slow down the bleeding in the tooth cavity.

Sea salt contains many minerals that are naturally found in the teeth. Thus rinsing with the water regularly can help to re-mineralize the teeth.

Infections

Canker sores and other painful infections are less likely to occur with regular rinsing. Bleeding gums can also be helped with regular rinsing or gargling. The salt helps to eliminate the harmful bacteria that creeps in behind the gumlines, and thereby reduces the bleeding. As a result, the gums become stronger and are able to return to their normal color.

Salt naturally stimulates the production of saliva, which is known to destroy harmful bacteria in the mouth. As a result it helps to not only fight infections, but it also helps to freshen the breath.
